Meet the Team
Connor and Bekah Hughes joined the AIA staff team in 2016. It was a return home for Connor after playing football at UVA and then professionally for the NFL, NFL Europe, and Arena League. Connor serves Athletes in Action locally as the Team lead and nationally as the US Champion for our South Africa Partnership. On any given weekend, you'll find Connor, Bekah, and their 4 boys remodeling their home, hiking, or involved with kids sports.

Kelly and Nancy Scott launched a ministry called Cru at UVA in 2000. From 2008 -2023 they led AIA at Virginia. Nancy remains on staff leading women athletes on grounds. Kelly stays connected and serves as Assistant Pastor at Trinity Presbyterian. Kelly and Nancy love hanging out with their five kids, taking evening walks to the grounds of UVA, enjoying meals in their home with students and other friends, finding yet another amazing restaurant in C’ville, exercising, and reading—especially over a good cup of coffee! Kelly did his graduate study at Reformed Theological Seminary.

Kevin Sauer and his wife Barb have been a pillar in the Charlottesville sports community for over 30 years. As the head coach of UVA Virginia Women’s Rowing team, Kevin the program to multiple ACC Championships and NCAA titles while investing deeply in the lives of student-athletes. During his time at UVA, Kevin became known not only for building one of the nation’s premier rowing programs but also for the relationships and mentorship he provided to his athletes. Today he is excited to continue investing in the spiritual growth of student-athletes through Athletes in Action. Kevin and Barb enjoy being part of the Charlottesville community and spending time with their children and three grand children..
Lydia Mathas and her husband Kurt moved to Charlottesville in 2025 after sensing a clear call to invest in the UVA community. She was a four-year starter and captain on the women’s soccer team at Kalamazoo College before earning her law degree from the University of Michigan and practicing as a corporate and governance attorney. Lydia is excited to build relationships with student-athletes and invest in their lives through discipleship with Athletes in Action. As a family, they enjoy exploring Charlottesville’s trails and mountains and spending summers sailing and paddle boarding in West Michigan with their three children.
